Privacy policy

Banton Labs Inc. ("Banton Labs", "we", "us"), of Ontario, Canada, makes Dusk. This policy explains what information the Dusk application, its website and its purchases involve, and what we do with it. In short: your voice and your text never leave your computer, and we collect as little as we can.
1. The Dusk application
Dusk turns speech into text and actions on your own computer. The following stay on your computer and are never sent to us or to anyone else:
- your microphone audio and any recordings you choose to keep;
- the text you dictate and the commands you speak;
- your history, dictionary, snippets and settings;
- the words counted for the free plan's weekly limit;
- Dusk's log, unless you choose to attach it to a problem report.
Dusk has no analytics, no telemetry and no crash reporting to a server. You can clear your history at any time, and Dusk deletes history older than the retention period you choose in Settings.
2. The connections Dusk makes
Dusk connects to the internet only for the three purposes below, and always through our server, api.duskdictation.com, which runs on Cloudflare. The server keeps no logs and stores nothing: it passes license requests on to Polar, and points downloads to where the files are hosted.
- Model downloads, when you choose a model: our server sends Dusk to its publisher's files, today on Hugging Face and GitHub, and Dusk downloads them from there. The host sees your IP address and the files requested, under its own privacy policy.
- The update check, at startup and once a day, and when you press "Check for updates": Dusk reads the list of the latest release, hosted on GitHub, and downloads the new version from GitHub when you choose to install it. GitHub sees your IP address. You can turn the check off in Settings, under Privacy.
- The license activation, when you enter a license key or remove this computer from it: Dusk sends our server the key and a label made of your computer's name and operating system, so you can tell your computers apart in Polar's customer portal. Our server passes them on to Polar; Polar sees the key and the label, not your IP address.
When you ask Dusk by voice to open a website or search the web, it opens your browser, which then works as it always does.
3. Buying a license
Polar Software Inc. ("Polar") sells Dusk licenses as our reseller and merchant of record. Polar collects your name, email address, billing country and payment details, and handles them under its own privacy policy. Card payments are processed by Polar's payment provider; we never see your card number. Polar shares with us your name, email address, country, order details, license key and the labels of the computers it is active on. We use them to deliver and verify your license, answer your questions, process refunds, and keep the records tax law requires.
4. The website
duskdictation.com sets no cookies, has no analytics or advertising, and loads nothing from other servers. It is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes your IP address and request details to deliver the pages and protect them from attacks. Downloads and problem reports are on GitHub, under GitHub's privacy policy.
5. Email
When you write to us, we receive your email address and what you send, and use them only to answer you. If you attach Dusk's log, it contains the app's activity and the length of your dictations, not their text, unless you turned on detailed logging.
6. What we don't do
We don't sell or rent personal information, use it for advertising, or build profiles. We share it only with the service providers named in this policy, as they need it to do their part, or when the law requires us to.
7. Legal bases
We handle personal information with your consent, to carry out our agreement with you (delivering and supporting your license), to meet legal obligations such as tax records, and for our legitimate interest in preventing fraud and misuse of license keys.
8. How long we keep it
We keep purchase records for as long as your license is active and for the period tax law requires afterwards, usually six years in Canada. We keep support emails for as long as needed to help you, and no longer than three years after our last exchange.
9. Where it is stored
Banton Labs is in Canada. Polar, its payment provider, GitHub, Hugging Face and Cloudflare may process information in the United States and other countries, with protections required by the laws that apply to them.
10. Your rights
You may ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, except what we must keep by law. Depending on where you live, you may also object to some uses or ask to move your information. Write to us and we will answer within 30 days. If you aren't satisfied, you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or to the data protection authority where you live.
11. Children
Dusk isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information.
12. Security
Dusk keeps its data in your user account's folders, readable only by you. We protect the information we hold with access controls and services that encrypt it in transit. Installers are signed so you can check they come from us.
13. Changes
If we change this policy, we post the new version here with a new date. If a change affects what Dusk sends from your computer, we say so in the release notes of the version that makes the change.
14. Contact
Questions and requests about privacy go to Banton Labs Inc., Ontario, Canada, [email protected].
